The collection of the chronicler Mr. Luis de Salazar y Castro (1658-1734) is one of the treasures of 18th century European erudition. Made up around 60,000 descriptive entries, its index occupies 49 printed volumes. It is an immense store where the royal chronicler compiled original documents, from medieval and later periods, copies including a great quantity of writing taken from public and private archives, prints of court case reports, political correspondence from Spanish monarchs and all types of erudite and curious papers.

It goes without saying that this is a great genealogist’s store - he was indeed one of the most important genealogists of his time – and thanks to its indices, we are provided with an unprecedented wealth of knowledge. As far as the Basque Country is concerned, as well as preserving the valuable documentation on his close relationship with Juan Ignacio de Olariaga from Burgos and José Tomás de Sarriá from Vitoria, the collection compiles very important information on the Country’s main families and on its institutions, as well as on plebeian Basques who served the monarchy from the 15th to the 18th centuries.

Irargi, under an agreement with the Royal History Academy, has created a database using the 49 volumes of the index which can be consulted on this website.
