ARCHIVE POLICY

Irargi is in charge of designing and running the Culture Department’s Documentary Heritage and Archive policy.
This policy is based around the Enlace externoArchive Plan Address, drawn up in 2002 for the Basque Culture Plan. This report was approved within the framework of the aforementioned Plan and it is the reference text for this policy’s development.
Regarding the specific results in our field of work, this website is the most eloquent showcase for these twenty years of work.
Apart from the legal development, which is the inexcusable reference for any policy (Enlace externo 1990 Cultural Heritage Law (BOPV – No. 157 - 06/08/1990)  and Enlace externo 2000 Archive Ruling (BOPV – No. 235 - 11/12/2000)), the strong point of our activity has been the boost to create and maintain a network of Municipal Archives, as well as cooperating with the owners of Family Archives and private archives in general to make sure that these non public stores are preserved and appropriately accessible.
Without meaning to be exhaustive, the range of the most relevant projects covered by Irargi, which show the real scope of our archive policy should include the following:

  1. Standardising the description of archive stores and putting them on the Internet as a search engine service, called Badator in order to make the Archives accessible to all citizens.
  2. Indexing the sacramental book stores provided by parishes in the three Dioceses within the Basque Country Autonomous Community, through an Agreement signed with them whose results can be consulted on this website.
  3. Systematically reproducing Archive stores, first on microfilm and now on DVD, in order to create the Basque Country Digital Archive Memory. These images will be accessible via Badator.
  4. Emphasis on organising family archives, whose practical results have been compiled in a Enlace externoFamily archive description manual
  5. Growing development of a policy centred on assessing and editing documentation. Its results will start to be seen during 2007.
  6. Support for creating efficient Municipal Archive Services, through a Enlace externo Subsidy Order to put into operation and/or consolidate its own Archive System on a yearly basis.
  7. Progressive deployment of the Basque Country National Historical Archive functions, particularly in the coordination and store compilation sector.
Since 2006, the most relevant project, without any doubt, has been the edification of the Basque Country National Historical Archive (Enlace externoPress release on the future location of the Basque Country National Historical Archive in Bilbao (31.03.2006)), which is the result of the these last few years’ work and the strong point of the aforementioned Basque Culture Plan.
