EASN/SNAE

SNAE is an administrative structure which groups together the Basque Country Regional Archive Services. Its functions and activities were regulated in the Enlace externo1990 Cultural Heritage Law (developed by the Enlace externo 2000 Archive Ruling). Irargi is in charge managing and developing it, covering the field of both public and private Archives.

The EASN/SNAE is conceived as a Service network based on inter-institutional cooperation and exchange of professional experience, through creating different work groups. Its general objectives are to homologise and create common work criteria, in addition to technical coordination and professional consultancy working towards configuring a Public Service in the field of preservation, treatment and diffusion of the Country’s Documentary Heritage, easily recognisable by citizens for whom the archive professionals work.

The Heritage Board is currently working on drawing up an Archive and Documentary Heritage Law. One of its objectives is to give this administrative structure more content and efficacy. The different work groups which work in the field of Municipal Archives, the Basque Health Service Network (Osakidetza) and the judicial Archives also contribute to setting up cooperation and homologation dynamics.

Finally, constructing the Basque Country National Historical Archive (whose inauguration is planned for 2009) is going to culminate the Basque Government Archive policy consolidation and SNAE articulation giving it a driving organism with sufficient critical mass.
